So, during the recording of Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones, Ltd, The Monkees apparently recorded a version of the Goffin-King composition Yours Until Tomorrow. If this recording is circulating, I certainly haven’t come across it (and I looked again for this post.) The hit version, not sung by the (now) late Davy Jones, was Gene Pitney’s. I like Gene Pitney, but his version is a bit lame:
It’s especially lame when pitted against another unreleased-at-the-time version by the great, but not late, Irma Thomas. She’s still alive, thankfully. I had to check. Our great voices have been dropping like flies lately and honored for a few days before the news cycle moves on. Anyway, I can only guess they didn’t issue her version because she totally overloads the vocal mic during the choruses. It took the powers that be (The Chess Bros, I guess) 20 years to realize that the song is that much better for that blast of distortion:
